KISS were originally founded under the name Wicked Lester in 1972 in New York City by Gene Simmons (bass, vocals) and Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar, vocals). After recruiting drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley, the group adopted the name KISS in early 1973 and began performing in the cityâs club circuit. Their high-energy shows quickly set them apart, leading to a record deal with Casablanca Records in November 1973. The bandâs self-titled debut album, released in 1974, sold only around 75,000 copies despite relentless touring and television appearances. However, their reputation as a spectacular live act grew rapidly. To capture this energy, KISS released the live album Alive! in 1975, which became their commercial breakthrough, selling over half a million copies and earning Gold certification. Throughout the late 1970s, KISS rose to global fame with a string of hit albums including Destroyer (1976), Rock and Roll Over (1976), and Love Gun (1977), producing anthems such as âRock and Roll All Nite,â âDetroit Rock City,â and âI Was Made for Lovinâ You.â The bandâs music fused glam rock, hard rock, and heavy metal, while their imageâcomplete with face paint, theatrical costumes, and pyrotechnic stage showsâbecame legendary. After internal tensions led to multiple lineup changes in the 1980s, Simmons and Stanley kept KISS active through various musical eras, from glam metal to their 1990s reunion tours. The original lineup reunited in 1996 for a massively successful comeback tour. Over five decades, KISS became one of the most commercially successful and recognizable bands in rock history, selling over 100 million records worldwide and pioneering the concept of music merchandising, with products ranging from comic books and action figures to branded clothing and even coffins. In 2019, KISS launched their farewell âEnd of the Road World Tour,â marking the culmination of a career spanning more than half a century. The band paid tribute to original guitarist Ace Frehley, who passed away on October 16, 2025, recognizing his unique style and lasting influence on their sound. KISS remain celebrated not only for their music but for their cultural impactâsynonymous with spectacle, rebellion, and the enduring power of rock ânâ roll.
