Biography
The Deep River Boys is an American gospel music group formed in the Hampton Institute in Virginia. The original lineup included Harry Douglass, Vernon Gardner, George Lawson, and Edward Ware. They won a talent competition on the radio that led to further radio and stage appearances. In 1952, "Recess in Heaven" became their first hit. In 1956, they achieved chart success in the UK with "That's Right", reaching number 29 on the UK Singles Chart. The group performed with notable artists such as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Count Basie. Their song "They Look Like Men of War" (1941) was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry in 2019.
