Biography

De Nieuwe Snaar was a Belgian folk and cabaret group from Duffel that was active between 1982 and 2014. Formed as the successor to the group De Snaar, the original trio consisted of Jan De Smet, Kris De Smet, and Geert Vermeulen, with Walter Poppeliers joining as a fourth member in 2000. They achieved widespread recognition with the song “De Prehistorie”, which served as the theme for the television program of the same name. The ensemble released several albums, including Hartelijk gefotografeerd in 1986, Hackadja in 1989, and Famineurzeven in 1997. In 2009, the group was honored with a street named Over de Nieuwe Snaar in Bornem. Kris De Smet published the book Het verhaal van De Nieuwe Snaar in 2011, shortly after the band announced their intention to disband. Following a farewell tour, De Nieuwe Snaar gave their final performance on April 25, 2014, at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp during an event titled De Ereronde.
