Biography

Sequentia is an early music ensemble established in 1977 by the musician Benjamin Bagby and the musician Barbara Thornton. They achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by Medieval music and for their focus on vocal music with texts including chants and dramatic performances. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for a career that began in Basel before moving to Cologne in 1977 and later relocating to Paris in 2002. Their recording career began with the debut studio recording Ludi Sancti Nicolai (1978) released under the name Ensemble Vocale Guillaume Dufay. Sequentia achieved professional recognition for conducting original research and performing partially staged presentations of works including Ordo Virtutum by the composer Hildegard of Bingen. Their discography included the studio recording Frauenlob. Heinrich von Meissen (1990) and the studio recording Dante and the Troubadours (1993). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Canticles of Ecstasy (1994) and performing Songs of Consolation (2016) based on 6th-century texts. Long-term members of the group achieved professional recognition for including Bagby, Thornton, the musician Norbert Rodenkirchen, and the musician Katarina Livljanic. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for recording primarily on the label Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
