Biography

Daniel Grafton Hill IV, known as Dan Hill, was born on June 3, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario. He is a Canadian singer and songwriter who began his musical journey at a young age, receiving his first guitar shortly after his tenth birthday. While still in high school, Dan Hill performed at concerts and coffee houses. In 1972, he signed with RCA Records, releasing a single the following year. His breakthrough came in 1975 when GRT Records released his first Canadian hit single "You Make Me Want to Be", followed by his eponymous debut album. In 1977, Dan Hill recorded "Sometimes When We Touch", which peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Number 1 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart. This success led to appearances on shows like The Merv Griffin Show and The Mike Douglas Show. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dan Hill continued to release albums such as Longer Fuse (1977), Frozen in the Night (1978), and Love in the Shadows (1983). In 1985, he contributed to the benefit single "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights. His career saw a resurgence in 1987 with the Top 40 hit "Can't We Try", a duet with Vonda Shepard. Dan Hill's work as a songwriter and producer earned him significant recognition, including a Grammy for his role on Celine Dion’s Falling Into You (1996) and five Juno Awards. In 2021, he was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. That year, he also released his fourteenth studio album On the Other Side of Here.
