Biography
Dealing in crooning soft rock ballads, Bread scored a string of US hits in the 1970s with their slick brand of hazy, heartfelt Californian rock. Inspired by the innocent joy of the British invasion bands of the 1960s and the shimmering harmonies of the Beach Boys and The Byrds, Bread was formed in 1969 by a group of seasoned Los Angeles musicians and named after a passing bread truck. Led by Jimmy Griffin, their eponymous debut album was largely ignored, but their single Make It With You became went to Number 1 in the US. With its gentle melodic pop, second record On The Waters (1970) reached Number 12 in the US and they went on to score Top 10 hits with If, Baby I'm-a Want You and Everything I Own. Baby I'm-a Want You (1972) became their most successful album, reaching Number 3 in the US, and the group's easy listening style produced one final hit in Lost Without Your Love before they split in 1978.
