Biography

Born Crystal Kay Williams on 26 February 1986 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Crystal Kay was just 11 years old when she signed a deal with Epic Records and recorded her first jingle. The commercial ditty soon morphed into her official debut single, "Eternal Memories" (1999), and a singing star was born. Her career escalated quickly after that, with two more R&B-minded singles—"Teenage Universe (Chewing Gum Baby)" and "Komichi no Hana"—arriving the same year and cracking the Japanese chart. She made a stylistic switch to acoustic indie for her debut album C.L.L Crystal Lover Light, released in 2000, before pivoting back to R&B-pop for the follow-up 637: Always and Forever (2001). She continued to build her repertoire with subsequent albums such as the poppier Crystal Style (2005), her ninth LP Spin the Music (2010), For You in 2018—her first release for Virgin—and 2021's I SING. In addition to her recording output, she has forged a successful career as an actor and radio host, appearing as the voice of Gloria in the Japanese dubbed version of Happy Feet Two (2011) and as Lisa in 2023 jazz biopic Between the White Key and the Black Key. In 2024, she went to number 23 on the J1 Top 40 Chart with "Love Myself."
