Cristina Buarque, born Maria Christina Buarque de Hollanda in SÃ£o Paulo on December 23, 1950, was a prominent figure in Brazilian samba, known for her dedication to preserving and interpreting the traditional music of Rioâs samba composers and communities. She made her recording debut in 1967 on Paulo Vanzoliniâs Onze Sambas e uma Capoeira, and soon appeared on Chico Buarque de Hollanda Vol. 3 (1968) with the track "Sem Fantasia." Her 1974 solo debut Cristina featured the standout "Quantas LÃ¡grimas," by ManacÃ©ia, launching a career focused on honoring the roots of samba. Through the late 1970s and 1980s, she collaborated on albums like ArrebÃ©m (1978), Vejo Amanhecer (1980), and Cristina e Mauro Duarte (1985), while contributing to key projects including Ãpera do Malandro, Nelson Cavaquinho â As Flores em Vida, and Clementina e Convidados. In the 1990s and 2000s, she deepened her legacy with projects such as Resgate (1994), tributes like Sem TostÃ£o... a Crise NÃ£o Ã Boato (1995), and Um Ser de Luz â SaudaÃ§Ã£o a Clara Nunes (2003). Cristina Buarque also played a central role in reviving classic samba repertories, particularly through her work with Portelaâs composers and albums like Cristina Buarque e Terreiro Grande Ao Vivo (2007). Until her passing on April 20, 2025, she remained a vital advocate for the cultural memory of Brazilian samba.
