Biography

Daughter of bossa nova star João Gilberto and singer Miúcha, Bebel Gilberto is a popular performer of Latin-influenced, jazzy world music whose recordings have been successful on the American charts. Her songs have featured on the soundtracks of several television shows such as 'Six Feet Under', 'Entourage' and 'The O.C.' and movies including 'Closer' (2004) and 'Eat, Pray, Love' (2010) starring Julia Roberts. She is the voice of Eva in the animated features 'Rio' (2011), in which she performs 'Girl from Ipanema', and 'Rio 2' (2014), in which she sings 'Real in Rio'. Born in New York, she grew up in Rio de Janeiro and New York and learned music early from her Brazilian musician parents. Her very first appearance on record was at the age of seven on 'Miúcha & Antônio Carlos Jobim' (1977), her mother's debut release and two years later she sang with her mother and saxophonist Stan Getz at Carnegie Hall in New York. She performed with Cazuza in the band Barão Vermelho and in 2000 she released her debut solo album 'Tanto Tempo', with electronic bossa nova songs that reached number two on the Billboard World Albums Chart. A release titled 'Tanto Tempo Remixes' went to number five on that chart later that year. Since then, Gilberto has continued to win praise for her concert performances and recordings such as 'Bebel Gilberto' which topped the World Albums Chart and reached number eight on the Independent Albums Chart in 2004; it also won a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary World Music Album. Other releases have included 'Bebel Gilberto Remixed' which went to number two on the World Albums Chart in 2005, 'Momento' which reached number four on the World Albums Chart and number 20 on the Independent Albums Chart in 2007, and 'All in One', also a Grammy nominee, which went to number three in the World Albums Chart. In 2014, her album 'Tudo' - which featured original songs, a cover of the Neil Young song 'Harvest Moon' and a duet with Seu Jorge - topped the World Albums Chart and reached number eleven on the Jazz Albums Chart.
