Biography

Christian Alejandro Cuturrufo Contador (performing as Cristián Cuturrufo) was a Chilean jazz trumpeter and cultural manager from Coquimbo, born on 27 June 1972. He studied classical trumpet at the Escuela Experimental de Música Jorge Peña Hen and the Catholic University of Chile before traveling to Cuba to study popular music and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Cuturrufo performed with the ensembles Motuto and Los Titulares and led various jazz quintets. His discography includes the albums Puro Jazz (2000), Recién Salido del Horno (2003), and the anthology Treinta Años en Trompeta (2009). Cuturrufo collaborated with Valentín Trujillo on the albums Jazz de Salón (2004) and Villancicos (2005) and recorded The Chilean Project Live at the Blue Note (2016). In 2001, he received the Premio Altazor for Best Musical Performance. Cuturrufo died in Santiago on 19 March 2021 due to complications from COVID-19.
