Biography

Formed in London, England in 1977, Creation Rebel was originally a studio-based dub reggae band under the production / leadership of Adrian Sherwood. Featuring Crucial Tony, Clifton Morrison, Peter ‘Doctor Pablo’ Stroud, Clinton Jack, and Eric Clarke, the group’s first landmark album, Dub Creation (1978) was the first album full album produced by Adrian Sherwood. Creation Rebel would continue to play on many of his productions for other artists including African Head Charge, New Age Steppers, and Dub Syndicate. They served as the backing band for Prince Far I on his album Crytuff Dub Encounter Chapter 1 (1978) and continued to release their own acclaimed albums including Close Encounters of the Third World (1978), Rebel Vibrations (1979), Starship Africa (1980), Psychotic Jonkanoo (1981), and Lows & Highs (1982). Some of the group’s singles became classic examples of their unique approach to mystical dub reggae including “Beware” (1979), “Independent Man” (1982), and “Love I Can Feel” (1982). Creation Rebel began playing live and building a reputation, even performing on the same bill as The Clash. When Prince Far I was murdered on September 15, 1983, Adrian Sherwood stepped away from production and the band went on hiatus. While Adrian Sherwood eventually returned to production, Creation Rebel didn’t officially reunite and record another album until 2023’s Hostile Environment.
