Consuelo Velázquez was a Mexican pianist and composer born on August 21, 1916, in Ciudad Guzmán. She began musical instruction at age six and relocated to Mexico City at age 11 to study at the National Conservatory of Music. In 1932, she composed the bolero "Bésame mucho", which was later recorded by artists including Emilio Tuero, Nat King Cole, and The Beatles. Velázquez appeared as an actress in the film Noches de Carnaval (1938) and performed as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. Her compositions included the tracks "Amar y vivir", "Cachito", and "Verdad Amarga". Between 1979 and 1982, she served as a federal deputy in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies. In 1989, she received the National Prize for Science and Arts. Her final recording was the piano performance on the album Para mÃ... Consuelo. Velázquez died on January 22, 2005, in Mexico City.
