Biography

Born in Jamaica and based in New York, reggae DJ and singer Charles Smith is better known as Conroy Smith. Active in the 1980s-1990s, he began playing on an Observer sound system as a teenager, performing with singer Nadine Sutherland. Settling in Kingston, he made a name for himself with the track "Indian Lady", released in 1985 on the Powerhouse label, before racking up a string of singles in the second half of the 1980s, including "Dangerous " and "Madonna" in 1989. Several dancehall tracks followed on different labels and with various producers such as King Jammy, Winston Riley and Bobby Konders, over the following decade. Conroy Smith then moved to New York, where he founded the Love Star Music label and devoted himself to producing artists such as Richie Spice, Luciano and Macka Diamond.
