Biography

Clancy Hayes was an American jazz singer and banjoist born in the United States in 1908. Clarence Leonard Hayes moved to San Francisco in 1927 and performed as a part of the local jazz scene. In 1938, they joined Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band as a singer, banjoist, and percussionist. During the 1950s, Hayes performed with Bob Scobey's Frisco Jazz Band. Their discography includes the albums Cakewalk to Lindy Hop (1956), Clancy Hayes Sings (1957), and Direct from San Francisco! (1957). They collaborated with artists including Turk Murphy, Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, and Earl Hines. Hayes’ repertoire featured the songs “Ace in the Hole” and their own composition “Huggin' and Chalkin'” (1946). Shortly before their death, Hayes recorded a series of piano rags. Hayes died in 1972.
