Biography

Alcide Pavageau, known as “Slow Drag”, was an American jazz double bassist and guitarist born in the United States in 1888. Pavageau performed as a dancer before beginning a career as a guitarist around 1905. They started playing the double bass in 1927 and joined the George Lewis band in 1943, performing with the group until the end of the 1950s. In 1945, Pavageau performed with Bunk Johnson in New York City. Their recordings include the album New Orleans: The Living Legends (1961) with the Louis Cottrell Trio and the George Lewis album New Orleans Jazz Band and Quartet (1954). Pavageau released the album Slow Drag's Bunch (1965) as a leader. Pavageau died in 1969.
