Biography

Born in Cambridge, United Kingdom, on August 2, 1992, to a father of Scottish descent and an Indian mother born in Uganda, Charlotte Emma Aitchison adopted the stage name Charli XCX and recorded her first independent album, 14 (2008), which remained relatively unknown. Emerging from the British electronic music scene of rave parties, she released two mixtapes and rose to prominence in 2012 by featuring on the number-one hit “I Love It” by the duo Icona Pop. The following year, she released the album True Romance (No. 85), which received critical acclaim. In 2014, Charli XCX made a name for herself with her contribution to Iggy Azalea’s U.S. number-one hit “Fancy” and achieved personal success with the track “Boom Clap” (No. 6), featured on the soundtrack for the film The Fault in Our Stars. The album Sucker, released at the end of the year, peaked at No. 15 in the UK and No. 28 in the U.S., while the single “Doing It”, featuring Rita Ora, reached No. 8. In 2016, she released the EP Vroom Vroom (No. 2 on the U.S. dance chart). Two new mixtapes, Number 1 Angel and Pop 2, preceded the trio single “Girls” (2018), featuring Rita Ora and Bebe Rexha. Charli XCX returned to the studio for the album Charli (No. 14 in 2019), featuring BTS, Lizzo, Troye Sivan, and Christine and the Queens. Her fourth album, How I’m Feeling Now (2020), recorded in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, peaked at No. 33 in the UK, and none of its singles achieved significant chart positions. She achieved her best commercial performance in 2022 with the album Crash , which earned her her first No. 1 album in the UK and in Australia, while peaking at No. 7 in the United States. Notable tracks include the singles “New Shapes”, featuring Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek, as well as “Beg for You ” featuring Rina Sawayama. In addition to contributing to the soundtracks for the films Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Barbie, and Bottoms, she performed a duet with Sam Smith on the track “In the City” (2023). The year 2024 proved to be a successful one with the release of the album Brat, which was acclaimed by critics and the public alike (No. 2 in the UK, No. 3 in the U.S.). Its reissue, featuring remixes and previously unreleased singles, Brat and It’s Completely Different But Also Still Brat, showcases a long list of guest artists including Billie Eilish, Lorde, Ariana Grande, Troye Sivan, Robyn, Yung Lean, The 1975, Jon Hopkins, Bon Iver, Tinashe, Julian Casablancas, The Japanese House, and Shygirl. In 2025, she collaborated with John Cale on the track “House”, the first single from the soundtrack to the film Wuthering Heights, which reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 8 on the Billboard 200 upon its release. In 2026, Charli XCX continued her foray into film with The Moment, a mockumentary inspired by the Brat era, which she produced, co-wrote, and starred in as herself. On July 24, she released Music, Fashion, Film, an experimental pop album with rock influences produced with A. G. Cook and Finn Keane, preceded by the singles “Rock Music,” “SS26,” and “Wink Wink.”
