Biography

Catupecu Machu is an Argentine alternative rock band whose extensive catalog incorporates influences from industrial and experimental music. The group was established by brothers Fernando and Gabriel Ruiz Díaz in 1994 in Villa Luro, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Despite the fluctuating lineup over the years, Fernando Ruiz Díaz has continually served as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter. The band released their studio debut Dale! in 1997, swiftly followed by the live album A Morir!!! in 1998. Their mainstream breakthrough in Argentine rock materialized with their acclaimed 2000 album Cuentos Decapitados. Successive releases, including the 2002's Cuadros Dentro de Cuadros, showcased the group's evolving musical prowess, consolidating them as one of the most acclaimed bands in Argentine rock history. El Número Imperfecto followed in 2004. The band endured hardship in 2006 when bassist Gabriel Ruiz Díaz was sidelined due to a car accident, yet they persevered, releasing Laberintos Entre Aristas y Dialectos in 2007, which includes an acoustic cover of Luis Alberto Spinetta's "Seguir Viviendo Sin Tu Amor." Their 2011 album, El Mezcal y la Cobra, was released amidst internal changes with the departure of Javier Herrlein and the introduction of Agustín Rocino as a drummer. Following the release of La Piel del Camino in 2016, the band took a temporary hiatus as its members ventured into new musical projects. However, Catupecu Machu returned to the music scene in 2022. Their innovative sound and significant contribution to Argentine and Latin American rock has earned them several accolades and recognitions, including the 2015 Konex Award, a testament to their impact on Argentine music.
