Catarina Maria de FranÃ§a Carneiro, known professionally as CÃ¡tia de FranÃ§a (born February 13, 1947, in JoÃ£o Pessoa, ParaÃba), is a Brazilian MPB singer, songwriter, and writer. FranÃ§a began piano lessons at age four and later studied classical piano at the Escola de MÃºsica Antenor Navarro before mastering the guitar, flute, and accordion. In 1967, she won the IV Festival Paraibano de MPB with the song âMarianoâ. After moving to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s, FranÃ§a collaborated with ZÃ© Ramalho, Elba Ramalho, and Sivuca. Her debut album, 20 Palavras ao Redor do Sol (1979), was followed by EstilhaÃ§os (1980), No BagaÃ§o da Cana / Um Brasil Adormecido (2012), and HÃ³spede da Natureza (2016). As a writer, she authored Zumbi em Cordel and the professional memoir Manual de SobrevivÃªncia. In 2023, FranÃ§a received the PrÃªmio MilÃº Villela - ItaÃº Cultural 35 Anos. Her eighth album, No Rastro de Catarina, was released in 2024.
