Biography

Cathal Joseph Patrick Smyth (born 14 January 1959 in London, England), known professionally as Chas Smash, is an English singer and trumpeter associated with the British ska/pop band Madness. In 1976, Smyth joined The Invaders as a bassist but was replaced the following year. By the late 1970s, he became a full member of Madness, contributing vocals and trumpet, and co-wrote the band’s international hit “Our House”. After Madness paused regular activity in the mid-1980s, Smyth worked in music industry roles, including A&R at Go! Discs, and helped organize the band’s reunion concert Madstock! in 1992. He later founded the independent label Rolled Gold Records (RGR Music) and released his debut solo album, A Comfortable Man, in May 2015.
