The Cate Brothers is an American band led by twin brothers Earl Cate on guitar and vocals and Ernest âErnieâ Cate on piano and vocals, both born on December 26, 1942, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The brothers began performing in the mid-1960s, playing country soul music in regional clubs. Their breakthrough came with their debut studio album, Cate Bros. (1975), released on Asylum Records and produced by Steve Cropper. The album produced the single âUnion Manâ (1975), which entered the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 24 on May 29, 1976. They followed with the albums In One Eye and Out the Other (1976) and Cate Bros. Band (1977), the latter featuring bassist Ron Eoff and drummer Terry Cagle, who died on February 12, 2023. In 1979, the group reached a wider audience when they appeared on the PBS music television program Austin City Limits (1979), taped in December 1978. In 1979, the group released the album Fire on the Tracks (1979) on Atlantic Records, which reached number 24 on the rock album chart. Although they released only one album in the 1980s, they performed on the touring circuit and resumed recording in the mid-1990s, issuing five albums on independent labels. These independent releases include Radioland (1995), Struck a Vein (1997), and the compilation Arkansas Soul Siblings: The Crazy Cajun Recordings (1999). The band entered semi-retirement after 2010, playing a handful of shows a year, with Earl Cate performing as Earl & Them.
