A descendant of The Staples Singers, a group she joined in the 1960s, Mavis Staples (b. Chicago, July 10, 1939) embarked on a solo career marked by a soulful blend of gospel, blues and country. After the remarkable Only for the Lonely (1970) and some disco-pop wanderings, the daughter of Roebuck "Pops" Staples returned to her gospel roots on Have a Little Faith (2004) and We'll Never Turn Back (2007). Subsequent albums for the Anti- label, You Are Not Alone (2010), One True Vine (2013) and If All I Was Was Black (2017), were produced by Jeff Tweedy, composer and guitarist with the band Wilco. After his collaborations with Arcade Fire and Gorillaz, the soul legend once again responded to the courting advances of rockers, working with Ben Harper, who wrote and produced We Get By for him in 2019. Six years later, the great voice of Southern soul is back with Sad and Beautiful World, with its country and rock accents.
