Biography

The Casa Loma Orchestra, an American dance band, was formed in 1927 in Detroit. Initially known as the Orange Blossoms, they adopted the name "Casa Loma" by 1929 after playing at the Casa Loma hotel in Toronto. The band's first recordings were released on Okeh Records in October 1929. Led mostly by saxophonist Glen Gray, the orchestra featured talented musicians such as Pee Wee Hunt and S. Jack Blanchette. They recorded for Brunswick until 1934 and then moved to Decca Records. Notable songs include "Under a Blanket of Blue" and "Wild Goose Chase", both in 1933. The band disbanded in 1947 due to the decline of big bands post-World War II but re-emerged from 1957 to 1963 as a recording session band in Hollywood, releasing fifteen LP albums for Capitol Records.
