Biography

The Dutch Swing College Band is a Dutch traditional jazz band formed in 1945 in the Netherlands. The group was established as an amateur combo of students. The initial lineup included Peter Schilperoort, Frans Vink, Henny Frohwein, and Tonny Nüsser. They performed as The Quartet of The Dutch Swing College before adopting the name Dutch Swing College Band in 1946. Their first recordings were released in 1948. In 1960, the group transitioned to a professional status. Their discography includes collaborations with Sidney Bechet, Neva Raphaello, and Big Bill Broonzy. In 1963, the ensemble received an Edison Award for Instrumental Music. Their recordings include the albums Jazz at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam (1958) and Goes Latin (1963). Their single “Letkis Jenka” (1965) reached Number 1 on the Dutch charts. Subsequent releases include the albums Dutch Swing College Band Meets Joe Venuti (1971), Update (2012), and 100 Years of Jazz (2017). The band received the Export Award in 1990 and the Sgt Peppers Jazz Club Award in 2017.
