Biography

Fletcher Henderson, born James Fletcher Hamilton Henderson on December 18, 1897 in Cuthbert, Georgia, was an American pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer. He began playing piano at age six and demonstrated a keen ability to read music by 13. After graduating from Atlanta University with degrees in chemistry and mathematics, Henderson moved to New York City in 1920 and joined Black Swan Records as musical director in 1921. Henderson's band became the house band at Club Alabam in January 1924 and later performed at the Roseland Ballroom. His collaborations with Louis Armstrong and Don Redman significantly influenced his early work. Henderson recorded extensively throughout the 1920s for various labels, including Vocalion, Columbia, and Brunswick. He passed away on December 29, 1952.
