Biography
Carol Stearns Sudhalter, also known as Carol Sudhalter, was born on January 5, 1943, in Newton, Massachusetts. She is a jazz saxophonist from a musical family; her father, Albert, played the alto saxophone, and her brothers were also musicians. In the early 1960s, she began playing flute while studying biology at Smith College. She took up the saxophone in 1975 and moved to NYC to join Latin Fever, an all-women Latin band produced by Larry Harlow. She founded the Astoria Big Band in 1986 and performed with notable artists such as Sarah McLawler, Etta Jones, Chico Freeman, Jimmy McGriff, and Duffy Jackson. In 2005, she released her album, Shades of Carol. Sudhalter was nominated for the International Down Beat Readersâ Jazz Poll in 2012, placing ninth in the category "Best Jazz Flutist".
