Cancer Bats formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 2004, when vocalist Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton set out to combine hardcore punk with metal, sludge, and Southern-rock riffs. Following a self-titled EP, the band released its debut album, Birthing the Giant, in 2006 and toured extensively across Canada and overseas. Its breakthrough second album, Hail Destroyer, arrived in 2008, featuring guest vocals from Billy Talentâs Ben Kowalewicz, Alexisonfireâs Wade MacNeil, and Rise Againstâs Tim McIlrath. Cancer Bats received a Juno Award nomination for New Group of the Year in 2009, while Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones followed in 2010 and earned a Rock Album of the Year nomination. The group released Dead Set on Living in 2012 and also performed Black Sabbath material under the name Bat Sabbath, issuing a covers EP in 2013. Produced by Ross Robinson, Searching for Zero appeared in 2015, followed by the surprise-released The Spark That Moves in 2018; both albums received Juno nominations. Cancer Bats revisited several songs acoustically on the two-part Youâll Never Break Us: Separation Sessions project in 2020 and 2021. Middleton left the group in 2021, and the remaining trio recorded Psychic Jailbreak, which arrived through Bat Skull and New Damage Records in 2022 and earned another Juno nomination. Guitarist Jackson Landry joined in 2023, completing a lineup of Cormier, Landry, bassist Jaye Schwarzer, and drummer Mike Peters. After further international touring and anniversary performances celebrating Birthing the Giant, Cancer Bats signed with Marshall Records. Produced by Kurt Ballou and featuring guests including Nate Newton, Chris Cresswell, Brooklyn Doran, and Efrem Schulz, the bandâs eighth album, Give Me Dirt, was released on August 7, 2026.
