Bundesjugendorchester is the German national youth orchestra, based in Bonn and founded in 1969. Established by Volker Wangenheim and Peter Koch within the Deutscher Musikrat, the ensemble was created to support winners of the competition Jugend musiziert. In 1970, the orchestra participated in the International Youth Orchestra Meeting conducted by Herbert von Karajan. The project collaborated with conductors including Kurt Masur, Kirill Petrenko, and Sir Simon Rattle. The repertoire includes works by Hans Werner Henze and Karl Amadeus Hartmann, as well as world premieres by composers such as Bernd Franke. Concert tours took the group to Israel (1976), England (1978), and Spain (1985). The orchestra received the Herbert-von-Karajan-Medaille in 1970 and the Deutscher Musikpreis in 1981. In 2013, the Berliner Philharmoniker became the group's patron.
