Biography

Chinese-Canadian pianist Bruce Liu made his name by winning first prize at the XVIIIth Warsaw Chopin Competition. Born Xiaoyu Liu in Paris to parents originally from Beijing on May 8, 1997, he followed his father to Montreal at the age of six, studying piano at home, then at the conservatory in Richard Raymond's class and at university with Đặng Thái Sơn. After appearing with the Cleveland Orchestra at the age of fifteen, the piano prodigy went on to multiply his international appearances, touring China twice. He wins a first prize in Montreal and the Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition (2012), the Prix d'Europe (2015), the Sendai International Competition in Japan (2016) and in 2017 reaches the final of the 15th Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv. On October 23, 2021, Bruce Liu was declared winner of the XVIII Frédéric-Chopin Competition in Warsaw. This consecration is followed by a world tour with various orchestras and recitals in Paris, Vienna and Tokyo. Following the release of two albums featuring his performances at the Chopin Competition, Winner of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition 2021 (Deutsche Grammophon) and Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 (Institut Fryderyk Chopin), the Canadian pianist makes his London debut, signing an exclusive contract with the Deutsche Grammophon label. This opened in 2023 with the recital Waves: Music by Rameau, Ravel, Alkan, to which Satie's Gnossiennes played on grand and upright pianos were added as a bonus. The following year, he performs Tchaikovsky's Seasons.
