Biography

Winner of the XVII Frédéric-Chopin International Piano Competition (2015), Seong-Jin Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea, on May 28, 1994. He gave his first concert at the age of twelve, and completed his musical training at the Paris Conservatoire with Michel Béroff. In 2008, he won first prize at the Frédéric-Chopin Competition for young pianists, and went on to win prizes at the Hamamatsu Competition in Shizuoka (2009), the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (third prize in 2011) and the Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv (2014). Recital tours around the world bring the young pianist to play alongside prestigious conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Myung-Whun Chung, Lorin Maazel, Marek Janowski and Mikhail Pletnev. The prodigy signed by Deutsche Grammophon is also acclaimed for his recordings including Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 (2016), the Debussy recital (2017), Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 conducted by Myung-Whun Chung (2018), Piano Concerto No. 20 K. 466 and Mozart's Piano Sonatas K. 281 & K. 332 (2018), followed in 2020 by The Wanderer recital, featuring works by Schubert, Berg and Liszt. After the continuation of his program dedicated to Chopin with the Piano Concerto No. 2 (2021) and a foray into Baroque music for The Handel Project (2023), the critically acclaimed virtuoso embarks on a marathon devoted to Ravel, for the composer's 150th birthday in 2025, with Ravel: The Complete Solo Piano Works and The Piano Concertos, conducted by Andris Nelsons at the helm of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
