Biography

Brainticket were an experimental Krautrock band formed in 1968. The band had an evolving set of multinational members, with musicians from Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and Italy. The mainstay of the band was the Belgian-born Joel Vandroogenbroeck. They were noted for their use of unusual instruments and mix of rock, jazz, folk and psychedelia. Brainticket released three albums in the early 1970s, 'Cottonwoodhill' in 1971, 'Psychonaut' in 1972 and the rock opera 'Celestial Ocean' in 1974, which was based on the afterlife of ancient Egyptian kings. They disbanded, but reformed again in the 1980s, releasing the albums 'Adventure' (1980) and 'Voyage' (1982). Vandroogenbroeck toured with a later version of the group in 2011 and released the album 'Past, Present and Future' in 2015, featuring contributions from members of the punk band UK Subs. Vandroogenbroeck died in December 2019.
