Boukan Ginen, a mizik rasin band from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, gained prominence in the early 1990s. The group's name translates to "bonfire" or "fire pit" and "ancestral home of enslaved Africans," reflecting their cultural roots. Their breakthrough came at the 1991 Carnival in Port-au-Prince, where they won the prize for best carnival song with "Pale Pale W" ("talk"), a track that supported the presidency of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The song was later included on their debut album Jou A Rive. Despite facing suppression from the military authority during Raoul Cédras' junta, Boukan Ginen received the Prix Découverte from Radio France International in 1994, becoming the third Haitian musical group to achieve this honor.
