Biography

Lolita Cuevas, born in 1910 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, was a singer. At the age of two, her family moved to Haiti, where she spent her childhood and adolescence. In 1925, at the age of fifteen, she gave her first professional concert in Port-au-Prince, marking the beginning of her career. She performed on radio stations and embarked on tours across the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States. In 1941, her rendition of "La Borinqueña" solidified her popularity among Puerto Rican audiences, leading to recordings of French and Creole versions of "En mi viejo San Juan". Her performances in Paris in 1944 and 1949 further expanded her reach. In 1953, she released Haitian Folk Songs with guitarist and arranger Frantz Casseus, featuring a collection of lullabies and salon méringues. She passed away in 1994.
