Flemish vaudeville and pop artist Modest Schoepen, known professionally as Bobbejaan Schoepen, was born on 16 May 1925 in Boom, Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium. He began his career as a singer and performer in the late 1930s, initially performing vaudeville shows with his sister Liesje Schoepen. His breakthrough came in 1948 with the release of "De Jodelende Fluiter" ("The Yodelling Whistler"), which became his first hit. He gained significant popularity in Belgium and the Netherlands, touring extensively and collaborating with notable artists such as Josephine Baker and Gilbert Bécaud. His musical repertoire spanned various genres, including cabaret, French chanson, country, and folk music. In 1953, he performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, becoming one of the first European artists to do so. In 2007, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. Bobbejaan Schoepen died on 17 May 2010 from cardiac arrest.
