Biography

Known as Jean Ferrat's first wife, Jacqueline Boissonnet dite Christine Sèvres also had her own career as a performer. Born in Paris on March 25, 1931, she began her career as an actress, choosing the pseudonym Christine Sèvres to avoid arousing her parents' suspicions. She worked in a variety of professions alongside roles in plays by Victor Hugo, Carlo Goldoni and Anton Chekhov, before turning to song. Hired by the cabaret Le Cheval d'or, between 1956 and 1960 she performed on the Left Bank stages such as L'Écluse, Le Vieux-Colombier, L'Échelle de Jacob, and on the Other Bank at Milord l'Arsouille and La Colombe. Her early encounter with Jean Ferrat led to songwriting and a union sealed in 1961. For her part, Christine Sèvres recorded the album 25cm Paris, Rive Gauche (1960), which won the Grand Prix du Music-Hall, and two EPs, Les Nomades (1962) and Point de Vue (1963), which were accompanied by supporting concerts for Georges Brassens and Barbara at the Olympia. After returning from a trip to Cuba and a tour with Brassens, CBS released the album Oscar et Irma (1968), featuring the song "Tu es venu" written by her husband, followed by their duet "La Matinée " (1969) and the album Vivre en Flèche (1970), featuring three Brigitte Fontaine covers. Lacking recognition, the singer quit singing in 1972 and retired to her family home in Antraigues-sur-Volane, to devote herself to painting. Seriously ill, she died of cancer in a Marseille hospital on November 1, 1981, at the age of 50.
