Robert Graeme Barnard (1933â2022) was an Australian jazz trumpet and cornet player born in Melbourne. Influenced by Muggsy Spanier and Louis Armstrong, Barnard began his career in 1947 in his family's dance band before joining Len Barnard's Famous Jazz Band in 1948. He made his first recording in 1949 and released âHow Long Bluesâ under his own name in 1952. Barnard toured with Graeme Bellâs band and collaborated with musicians including Ruby Braff, Peanuts Hucko, and Milt Hinton. In 1976, he performed at the Bix Beiderbecke Festival in the United States. His discography includes Riverboat Days (1976) and Live at the Sydney Opera House (1995), the latter receiving an ARIA Music Award nomination. Barnard won two Mo Awards and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1990. He died on May 7, 2022.
