Black Slate is a British reggae band that emerged in London in 1974, founded by musicians from England, Jamaica, and Anguilla. The group first gained attention backing prominent Jamaican singers-Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, and Dennis Brown-when they performed in the UK, and released the antiâmugging single "Sticks Man" in 1976, which charted in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 1978 the band toured the UK independently for the first time and launched its own TCD label, producing the minor hit "Mind Your Motion". Their breakthrough came in 1980 with the single "Amigo", which reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart and was followed by the selfâtitled album Black Slate (1979) and the dub LP Ogima (1981). Subsequent releases included Sirens in the City (1981), Six Plus One (1982), and a selfâtitled album Black Slate (1985). After a decadeâlong hiatus, the band returned with the album World Citizen (2013) and embarked on European and US tours in 2014, releasing Now and Then that year and Peaceful Demonstration in 2016 on TCD Records. The lineup, featuring founding members Anthony Brightly, Chris Hanson, Desmond Mahoney, and vocalist Jesse Brade, continued to record and tour into the 2020s, with Anthony Brightly later producing over five hundred records and contributing the 1992 single "One Girl Too Late" under the name Pure Silk.
