Biography
William Joseph Mayerl was an English pianist and composer born on 31 May 1902 in London. He achieved professional recognition for a musical style specializing in light music and syncopated novelty piano solos, having studied at the Trinity College of Music from age seven. Mayerl achieved professional recognition as the soloist in the London premiere of George Gershwinâs Rhapsody in Blue (1925). In 1926, he established the School of Syncopation, which offered the correspondence course How to play like Billy Mayerl. His recording career includes the track âMarigoldâ (1927). Mayerl composed over 300 piano pieces and works for orchestra, including the Aquarium Suite (1937) and the musical theatre productions Sporting Love (1934), Twenty to One (1935), and Over She Goes (1936). Mayerl died on 25 March 1959 in Beaconsfield.
