Michiel Borstlap, born on August 5, 1966, in The Hague, is a Dutch composer and pianist. He studied at the Conservatory in Hilversum, graduating with highest honors. In 1992, he won the Prize for Best Soloist at the Europ' Jazz Contest in Belgium. Borstlap's breakthrough came in 1996 with the Thelonious Monk/BMI Composers Award for his composition "Memory of Enchantment", recorded by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. He composed the Arab opera Avicenna in 2003. Notable albums include Piano Solo Standards (2004), The Sextet Live! (2007), and Eldorado (2008). Borstlap has collaborated with artists such as Bill Bruford and Gino Vannelli, and his solo albums from 2010 onwards, including Blue (Songs From Father To Daughter), marked a significant career shift. He has received awards like the Edison Award for Bennink/Borstlap/Glerum Piano Notations in 2009 and the Gouden Kalf for Best Music in the film Tiramisu (2008).
