Biography
Herbert Feuerman, known professionally as Bert Firman, was born on February 3, 1906, in London. He started his musical career early, winning a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and playing at the Playhouse Theatre. Later, he secured the role of Sascha, a gypsy violinist, in the musical Sally at the Winter Garden Theatre. In 1924, Firman became the musical director for Zonophone Records. He led successful bands throughout the 1920s and 1930s at venues like the Alhambra Theatre and the Coliseum Theatre. During World War II, he entertained troops with Stars in Battledress. Post-war, he led bands in Paris and London before retiring from bandleading. His discography includes the compilation album The Bert Firman Bands 1925-1931 (1975). He died on April 9, 1999.
