Biography
Bern Nix, born on September 21, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, was an American jazz guitarist. He began playing guitar at age eleven and was influenced by jazz greats such as Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian. After graduating from the Berklee College of Music in 1975, Nix joined Ornette Coleman's electric band Prime Time, where he played guitar for twelve years. During this period, he contributed to several notable albums including Dancing in Your Head (1977) and Of Human Feelings (1982). In 1985, Nix formed a trio with bassist William Parker and drummer David Cappello. He later led another trio with bassist Bill Zola and drummer Adrian Valosin from October 1994 to December 2005. Notable releases during this time include Low Barometer (2006) and Negative Capability (2013). Nix collaborated extensively with artists such as Jayne Cortez, Marc Ribot, and John Zorn. He passed away on May 31, 2017.
