Biography

Ben van Gelder (born November 9, 1988) is a Dutch jazz alto saxophonist and composer from Groningen who lives in New York City. Van Gelder began playing at age 11 under the tutelage of Benjamin Herman and Simon Rigter before studying at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. He won the Publikumspreis at the Prinses Christina Jazzconcours in 2004 and received the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship in 2005. Van Gelder performed at the Bimhuis and the North Sea Jazz Festival. He released his debut album, Frame of Reference, in 2011 featuring Aaron Parks and Ambrose Akinmusire. His discography includes the albums Reprise (2013), Scopes (2019), and Manifold (2023). He collaborated on Reinier Baas' album Mostly Improvised Instrumental Indie Music, which won the Edison Jazz Nationaal in 2013. In 2024, van Gelder released the album This Is Water with Baas.
