Carlos Valdés Galán, known as Carlos "Patato" Valdés, was born on November 4, 1926, in La Habana, Cuba. He started playing percussion instruments at a young age and joined Conjunto Kubavana by age 18 in 1944. In 1954, he emigrated to New York City and became a prominent sideman for jazz and Latin music ensembles. His first U.S. full-length recording as a sideman was the LP Afro-Cuban by Kenny Dorham. Valdés collaborated with notable artists like Mongo SantamarÃa, Tito Puente, Herbie Mann, Dizzy Gillespie, and Quincy Jones. He contributed to the development of the first tunable conga drum and released albums including Authority (1976) and Ritmo y candela (1995). Valdés was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2001. He passed away on December 4, 2007, in Cleveland, Ohio.
