Biography

Formed in early December 1970 in Warsaw, Poland, Bemibek was a world music group formed by Aleksander Bem (drums/vocals) and Andrzej Ibek (piano/organ/vocals). The duo was joined by Aleksandra Ewa Bem (Aleksander’s sister) on vocals and percussion and Tadeusz Gogosz on bass. The band played music that touched on jazz, rock, Latin music, and bossa nova. The quartet made their first recording for Polish radio shortly after forming. During the course of the next year, they also released several singles and EPs. In March 1971, they own first place at the Odra Student Jazz Festival in Wroclaw. They also played other successful festivals including the Jazz Jamboree ’71 International Jazz Festival in the fall of that year. They toured in the USSR, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia as well as all over Poland. During this busy time, percussionist Marek Bliziński joined the group. Their first collection, Dyskoteka 4, was released in 1972. Ibek, Gogosz, and Bliziński left the band leaving the Bem siblings to lead the band, which they renamed Bemibem, bringing an end to the short-lived career of Bemibek. Twenty years later, Bem Bem, Ibek, and Pawel Dabrowski revived the band, adding a few newer members. In 1993, the band released the album Dziennik mej podróży in 1993.
