Biography

Basil Salvador Valdez, born on November 8, 1951 in Manila, Philippines, is a Filipino singer. His musical journey began during his college years when he performed impromptu at a Catholic retreat, substituting for an ill guitarist and singing "The Fool on the Hill" by The Beatles and "Alfie" by Dionne Warwick. Valdez became a prominent balladeer as Original Pilipino Music (OPM) flourished in the 1970s. He was part of the Circus Band, which also produced soloists like Hajji Alejandro and Tillie Moreno. After the band's breakup, Valdez released his debut album Ngayon at Kailanman in 1977, featuring the wedding song "Ngayon at Kailanman." He collaborated with composers Ryan Cayabyab and George Canseco. Notable songs include "Let the Pain Remain" and "Nais Ko," some of which became movie themes in the 1980s. Valdez has received several Tinig Awards and the 1991 Tanglaw ng Lahi Award from Ateneo de Manila University.
