Biography

Robi Botos, a Hungarian-Canadian jazz pianist, was born on October 12, 1978 in Nyíregyháza to a Roma family and grew up in Budapest. He began playing piano at age seven. In 1998, Botos immigrated to Canada and became a prominent member of the Toronto jazz scene. His breakthrough moment came with his victory at the Montreux Jazz Festival piano competition in 2004. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with notable musicians such as Michael Brecker, Pat LaBarbera, and Dave Young. In 2015, Botos released Movin' Forward, an album that won a JUNO Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year (Solo) in 2016. He also composed the music for the 2011 documentary A People Uncounted.
