Biography

With more than 25 studio albums to their credit the band Azymuth are one of the most enduring jazz funk groups in Brazilian music today. The original band were formed in 1973 and consisted of Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboards, Alex Malheiros on bass and guitar and Ivan Conti on drums and percussion. The band is best known for the period between 1979 and 1988 when they were signed to the American jazz label Milestone Records. During this time they released a series of critically-acclaimed albums including 'Outubro' in 1980 and 'Spectrum' in 1985. Bertani left the band in 1988 but returned once more in 1990 and resumed his career with the trio. Since 1996 the band have recorded for the label Far Out, their most recent album being 'Fênix', released in 2016.
