Biography
Ayten Alpman is a Turkish singer. She was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 10, 1929. After completing her high school education, she began her singing career in the 1950s. Encouraged by Turkish producer Arif Mardin, Alpman initially focused on jazz. In 1959, she released her first record, Sayonara/Passion Flower. Ayten Alpman gained widespread fame in 1974 with her song "Memleketim" ("My Country"), which became a patriotic anthem during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. Although the song was originally released in 1972, it gained immense popularity two years later during the Cyprus conflict. Despite her fame, Ayten Alpman was selective about her studio recordings; she released only two LPs during her lifetime. Among her other well-known songs are "Sensiz Olmam," "Yanımda Olsa," and "Ben Varım." In 1999, a compilation of her best-known singles was released by Ada Music. She was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Istanbul Jazz Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, in 2007. Ayten Alpman continued to give occasional jazz concerts even after undergoing surgery for vocal nodules in 1995, but she did not return to professional recording. She passed away from respiratory failure on April 20, 2012, in Istanbul at the age of 82.
