Biography
The Avon Cities Jazz Band, a jazz group from Bristol, England, was formed in 1949. The band gained initial traction through performances of jazz standards and original compositions like "African Song" from the album Tempo Fugit. In 1952, core members Geoff Nichols, Mike Hitchings, Ray Bush, and Basil Wright formed the Avon Cities Skiffle Group, releasing their hit single "Green Corn" (originally by Lead Belly) and appearing on BBC Light Programme shows. Notable albums include Avon Cities Jazz Band (1956), "Avon Cities Jazz" (1958), Bristol Fashion - Live in London (1970), and Blue Funk (1973). The band achieved significant success in the 1970s and 1980s. Geoff Nichols and Mike Hitchings remained with the group until its disbandment in 2000.
