Audio Active, a Japanese reggae fusion band, was formed in 1987 as a solo project by singer Masa. The group evolved into a full band in 1991 with the addition of 2DD, Shigemoto Nanao, and bassist Takeshi Akimoto. Audio Active's debut album, The Way Out is the Way In, was released in 1995, featuring collaborations with zither player Laraaji and producer Adrian Sherwood. The band gained recognition for their unique blend of reggae, dub, and hip-hop influences, notably releasing albums such as "Happy Shopper" (1994) and Apollo Choco (1997). Their work was often produced by Adrian Sherwood and released on labels like On-U Sound and Warner Music Group. Notable singles include "Free the Marijuana" (1994), featuring Bim Sherman, and "Weed Specialist" (1997). The band's final album, Return of the Red I, was released in 2005. Audio Active disbanded in 2005.
