Artists United Against Apartheid was a protest group formed in 1985 by activist and performer Steven Van Zandt and record producer Arthur Baker to raise awareness about apartheid in South Africa. The group's primary achievement was the release of the song "Sun City" and the accompanying album Sun City. Inspired by the plight of Native Americans, Van Zandt wrote a song about Sun City, a luxury resort in Bophuthatswana that circumvented apartheid laws. With the help of journalist Danny Schechter and producer Arthur Baker, Van Zandt assembled an unprecedented lineup of artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, and many others, who vowed never to perform at Sun City as a stance against apartheid. The song featured the iconic chorus "I ain't gonna play Sun City" and included contributions from a diverse array of musicians. The project also included a behind-the-scenes documentary directed by Oscar-winner Jonathan Demme, capturing performances at Manhattan's Washington Square Park.
